From the beginning of her career Ana Mendieta addressed the female body in order to dislocate its mandates, whether social or natural, and to explore its potential. In Untitled (Glass on Body Imprints), the artist placed Plexiglas sheets on her nude body as a means to dissociate its parts and question established parameters of female beauty. Rape Scene is an extremely confrontational work made in response to a rape and murder that had recently taken place at the University of Iowa, where Mendieta was studying. The photograph documents a private performance that she staged in her apartment for a group of her fellow students, posing as the seminude, bloodied victim of a sexual assault. This work is related to the feminist agenda on the issues of violence and defenselessness. Mendieta envisioned her work as a situation that confronts viewers with a realistic representation of traumatic events, obliging them to address their emotions and to take a stand.
