Another month, another Metroidvania Game Jam, this time themed around Nurturing! Out of 43 entries, our entry, Kami: The Great Guardian, placed 5th overall! Please, everyone, go give the game a play as we had a blast making it! https://lnkd.in/gxYawSeb (I hope the link works properly, and if not I will post again with just the link)For the rest of the categories, we ranked 3rd in the Metroidvania category that tested our ability to construct a game within the design principles that constitute one. In Relevance To The Theme Picked, a category which measured how well we integrated the theme into our game in a creative or interesting way, we placed 4th. In the category of Enjoyment, our game ranked 8th. In Sensory, the category that measured how the game appealed to the eyes and ears and the atmosphere it created, we ranked 10th. And in Execution of how our game's concepts were put together, i.e. did it have bugs, was the idea creative and original, was the level design, map, narrative, and worldbuilding well implemented, we ranked 6th!As always, this game jam was a blast to participate in, and this time, I was reminded of a lesson I learned back in college: clarity. Clarity within my documentation as the Narrative Lead. While I had managed to work fine within the month time frame and get all my work done on time, my lack of clarity within the visual descriptions of environments, enemies, and environmental hazards set the team back. I managed to rework my documents fast enough, but the damage was already done for the first week of production. A hard lesson to relearn, but one I needed to as we moved forward, and currently move forward to polish this game and get it ready for a Steam release!#videogames #gamejam

Painfully long is right. 😲 It look 8 years to build Concord and about 2 weeks for Sony to axe it. This is a strong example of what's wrong with the games industry, especially in the AAA space. How can a game remain relevant and feel innovative to audiences when it takes that many years to develop? And exactly how high of a bar do you have to hit in terms of quality and scope to meet player expectations after that length of time?! Indie studios can continue to lead the way in demonstrating 'what good looks like' for an industry that desperately needs a re-write. I firmly believe we can deliver outstanding experiences for our audiences by combining sustainable development with scalable growth strategies. In summary, we need to be embracing shorter, iterative and more cost effective development times, and identify scalable strategies to maintain Live Services.#indiegames #gamedevelopment #gamedev #innovation Sony Simply Sweet Games #gameindustry #videogames

Unlikely Hits:SubnauticaThere is a very practiced tendency, especially on Linkedin itself, that most people in the gaming industry will write breathlessly about successes on a large scale like it was inevitable and the writer’s only knowledge starts after the success happened.When this happens…it causes many people to say “of course it succeeded and we always knew”.Uh, no.After witnessing this process with Larian Studios and their full release of #Baldur’sgate3, it caused me to write not-so-kind words to the post and article writers of that time’s moment. Having followed and owned every Larian game for years myself, that was truly a long process of nearly twenty years of that studio earning ground and technique in game-after-game that was released. They are not alone in this manner, I can think that groups like Obsidian Entertainment and Owlcat Games also had this slow gain on their methods and talents, then declared ‘overnight’ successes.How similar this type of treatment was was for Unknown Worlds Entertainment when they started and people downed their efforts as a mere ‘mod’ studio.In fact, I find it remarkable that a studio that began with the premise of blending FPS with RTS elements for sheer idea to see if they could make it work…did a radical and unexpected turn: their subsequent releases have nothing to do at all with where they began. Case in point: Subnautica has only really the first person viewpoint in common with Natural Selection. It's a survival, crafting and open world with a very deep mystery happening that the player encounters dynamically as they do their interest in the game.Also not in space, but beneath the waves.The entire combination of those elements in a single player and very private way to roll out the splendor of what they have in store for those players? It's masterful.Yes, from a ‘mere’ modding group. The key is now a buzz word that is often spoken but rarely done: Immersive.You are not on a leaderboard, you are dealing with achievement races. You are ever present in the world that you dictate as you play.Some numbers as always to cement things:(as usual, these are estimates from data I have available and checked across other sources. Currently limited to steam sales only)Estimated 6+ million sales of #Subnautica.Read that over again and realize that is one platform only.
