What carrier model do I have? ›

Look on the back of your unit, and you'll find the model number listed on a silver series rating-plate located above the service valve connections. If your heat pump is geothermal, the model information should be easily found on the front of the unit.

What is a 3 Ton AC Unit? A 3 Ton AC unit is a type of air conditioner system that has the ability to cool up to approximately 1,500 to 2,500 square feet of living space, although there are many other factors that contribute to determine the size/tonnage of your AC needs.

Simply divide the BTUs by 12,000 to calculate the tonnage of your unit. For example, if your air conditioner is 36,000 BTUs, you have a 3 ton unit. Some manufacturers bury tonnage or BTU information in their model numbers. Look for an even, two-digit number between 18 and 60.

How can I confirm the model and serial numbers for my cooling system? The model and serial number can be found on the rating plate of your air conditioner or heat pump. This is generally found slightly above the refrigerant valves on the back side of the unit.

There should be a label on the unit which shows the model number. Often, the model number contains a number related to the tonnage. For example, one ton is 12,000 BTU per hour, two tons is 24,000, and so on. For a unit of typical size, if you see “24” in the model number, it's probably a 2-ton unit.

Central air conditioning systems can last anywhere between 10 to 30 years, with most averaging around 10 to 15 years total (1). Keep in mind, the lifespan of your air conditioner depends on how much you use it, your local climate, what type of AC it is, and if your house is well insulated and air sealed.

Many HVAC contractors will happily provide a very specific answer to your question about the AC in the 2,000 square foot home. Depending on whom you ask, you might be advised to purchase a 3.5 ton unit. Other contractors will steer you toward 4 tons.

AC Unit Size

The typical 2,000-square-foot home will need a central AC unit that is around 3 tons or 36,000 BTU. The larger an AC system is, the more it will cost.

Hello,Typically a 16X20 would be fairly standard for most applications on a 3 ton unit. However if you want superior air flow I would highly suggest putting in a 20X20 as that gives you far better airflow hands down.

Is a 3 ton AC unit good for 2200 square feet? ›

1,600-1,800 square feet: Look for an AC unit with 27,000 BTUs (2.25 tons) for effective cooling. 1,800-2,000 square feet: A 30,000 BTUs (2.5 tons) unit is ideal for this square footage. 2,000-2,200 square feet: For homes of this size, a 33,000 BTUs (2.75 tons) AC will provide the best cooling.

Let's say that you have a 3-ton AC unit. In this case, it will likely be rated somewhere around 3,000 to 3,500 watts per hour or 3 to 3.5 kilowatts per hour (kWh).

If your AC is too big for your home, you'll notice at least one of the following 3 problems: Your air conditioner turns on and off right away. Your AC is not removing humidity. You have higher energy bills.

On most devices, you can usually find the model number on a label located on the front, back, side, or bottom.
